Calculate Percentage Difference
Calculate percentage difference from your inputs with a quick browser-based result.
Direct Answer
The percentage difference compares two numbers by dividing their absolute difference by their average, then multiplying by 100. For 40 and 10, the difference is 30, the average is 25, so the percentage difference is 30 / 25 x 100 = 120%.
Percentage Difference Formula
Use this formula when neither number is the fixed starting value:
Percentage difference = |value 1 - value 2| / ((|value 1| + |value 2|) / 2) x 100
Example: 40 and 10
- Find the absolute difference:
|40 - 10| = 30 - Find the average of the two values:
(40 + 10) / 2 = 25 - Divide the difference by the average:
30 / 25 = 1.2 - Convert to percent:
1.2 x 100 = 120%
That is why 40 and 10 gives 120% as a percentage difference. If you want the percent change from 40 down to 10, use percentage decrease instead: (40 - 10) / 40 x 100 = 75%.
